From Digital to Physical

When it comes to Postcards, creating and sharing art aren’t usually the first things that come to mind - travel and letter writing are far more common associations. But when designer and illustrator Rory Muldoon completed his personal project “The Great Bears,” it was MOO Postcards that he used to help make his computer design a tangible reality – and eventually, a work of art!

With design experience that has spanned the London 2012 Olympics, to presentations for Johnson & Johnson, to dozens of personal projects (some completed, others admittedly filed away in his digital recesses), Rory’s work history is delightfully varied.  “Sometimes I start with a sketch and sometimes I start with words,” he explains. “I’m a big fan of using writing as a way of kicking off a project. Whilst I mostly work digitally, it’s a very organic crafting process.” In other words, he’s no stranger to bridging the gap between digital art and tangible art – often beginning a project with a pen and paper instead of a computer and mouse.

Labour of Love

Inspired by diagrammed constellations, geometry and mythology, Rory began ‘The Great Bears’ design while fooling around with Adobe Illustrator, with no particular goal in mind. The result was a series of brilliant bear designs featuring eye-catching gradients and dimensions. Once completed, he decided to print them out on to Luxe Postcards for a thicker card stock that could be easily framed, effectively transforming them into mountable art pieces. He then displayed them at a local artist’s collective exhibition, making both framed and unframed cards purchasable to those interested in his work. In just a few steps, he managed to turn a small personal project into a full on artist’s display (with a little printing help, of course!).
